Chicana/Latina Studies: the Journal of Mujeres Activas en Letras y Cambio Social is an interdisciplinary, peer reviewed, bi-annual publication of Mujeres Activas en Letras y Cambio Social (MALCS). This feminist Chicana/Latina/Native academic organization is dedicated to building bridges between community and university settings, to transforming higher education, and to promoting new paradigms and methods. As the publication of a diverse association that aims to provide space for those historically marginalized, the Journal publishes academic and creative works by Chicanas/Latinas of the Americas and is receptive to all scholarly methods and theoretical perspectives that examine, describe, analyze, or interpret our experiences. The Journal welcomes English or Spanish submissions of scholarship, commentary, reviews, and creative writing.

While primarily an academic Journal, we encourage submissions in a style accessible to a broad audience. We urge contributors to be sensitive to the social implications of language and to seek wording free of discriminatory overtones.

Based on the mission of MALCS, the Journal fosters mentoring relationships in order to transform higher education. Submission of a manuscript is taken to indicate the author's commitment to publish in this periodical. The Journal offers its commitment to assist authors in publication. Manuscripts should be unpublished in the language of the submission and should not be under consideration for publication by any other journal or anthology editor.
Please submit four paper copies of the manuscript and four paper copies of an abstract to the address below. An electronic version of the submission need not be sent at this time. With prior communication, the co-Editors will accept electronic submissions from scholars and writers living outside of the United States. Manuscripts will not be returned. Writers and scholars are encouraged to join MALCS.

Manuscript Preparation All submissions should be typewritten, double-spaced, including quotations, notes, references, captions, and headings. Use one side of 8 x 11-inch or A-4 white bond paper, 12-point font, and one-inch margins on all sides. Use consecutive page numbering at the bottom right of the page. Do not justify margins or turn on automatic hyphenation of words. To maintain anonymity in the review process, please put names, affiliations, telephone numbers, fax, e-mail address, and a preferred mailing address on a separate title page. Citations to an author’s own works should be made in a way that does not compromise anonymity.

For all matters of style, especially for notes and references, please consult the latest edition of The Chicago Manual of Style. The Journal uses the author-date documentation style. Insert brief parenthetical acknowledgments in the manuscript wherever you incorporate another's words, facts, or ideas. A list of works cited, alphabetized according to authors' last names, should be appended at the end of the article. Information about the Chicago Manual of Style may be obtained from the following websites:
     http://www.wisc.edu/writing/Handbook/DocChicago.html
     http://www.chicagomanualofstyle.org/cmosfaq.html

The Journal has no manuscript page minimum or maximum, but prefers scholarly articles of 5,000 words or 25 pages (not including tables, notes, or references); commentary articles with less than 2,500 words; and review articles with approximately 1,000 words. For information about creative writing submissions, see below.

Cover letter In the cover letter the author(s) must state that the manuscript is original, and has not been published elsewhere, nor is it under consideration elsewhere. Indicate whether the work is scholarship, commentary, a review, or creative writing.

Title Page Give title, author(s), institutional affiliation(s), current and preferred mailing address, telephone numbers, and e-mail address. Give acknowledgments at the bottom of this page (these comprise the first unnumbered paragraph of the notes); if the paper is accepted, the co-Editors will place them with the notes.

Abstract Each article-length manuscript must begin with an abstract of less than 175 words. It should provide a summary of the essential points and findings of the paper. The abstract should end with a bracketed list of up to seven index words or phrases ("key words"). The abstract does not count toward the page or word limit. If the submission is written in Spanish, provide an abstract in English.

Text References The Journal requires the author-date system as outlined in the Chicago Manual of Style. In this system, references to works are included in the text and correspond to the Works Cited at the end of the manuscript. In the text, the author’s last name and the year of publication are enclosed in parentheses (González 1999). Page numbers follow the date, preceded by a comma (Sosa Riddell 1974, 157). When there is more than one author, the following formats should be followed: two authors (de la Torre and Pesquera 1983); three authors (Lamphere, Zavella, and Gonzales 1993); and more than three (Alarcón et al. 1993). If the author is not known, the text reference should substitute the title of the article or book for the author (the title may be shortened as necessary).

Notes The co-Editors ask that authors keep notes brief. Use endnotes rather than footnotes. Notes are numbered consecutively throughout the text by superscript numerals. Although the Notes section should go before the Works Cited section, some word processing programs automatically place them at the end. If this is the case, leave them there. If accepted for publication, the copyeditor will adjust placement of the notes.

References.  All entries must be double-spaced, listed alphabetically by last name, and reverse chronologically for two or more titles by the same author(s). Do not include any publication not cited in the text.  All publications in the Works Cited section must appear in the text.

Illustrations, Tables, and Figures Supply tables, figures, and illustrations on separate sheets at the end of the manuscript. Number each consecutively. Indicate their position within the text clearly, inserting TABLE 1 ABOUT HERE (set off by double spacing above and below). Provide a short (10-15 words) descriptive title as well as sources and acknowledgements. Notes for tables appear at the bottom of each table and are marked with lowercase, superscript letters. Illustrations must be submitted in a form suitable for publication without redrawing. If accepted for publication, illustrations, tables, and figures must be submitted in electronic format.

Obtaining Permission to Reprint Include a letter of permission for all borrowed illustrations, tables, figures, or other material. It is the author's responsibility to obtain the reprint permission.

Suggesting Reviewers Authors may provide a list of up to three individuals (with institutional affiliations and postal and electronic addresses) who they feel would be appropriate reviewers. The co-Editors are not bound by these suggestions, but will respect requests for exclusion of specific reviewers.

Creative Writing Please submit no more than 6 poems or 2 fiction or testimonio pieces (maximum of 10 pages each). You may submit your written work in Spanish, English, Spanglish, or any combination of languages generated by the diaspora and/or colonization processes (i.e. Quechua and Spanish, Nahuatl and English). Works are chosen for publication through a blind review process.

Review Essays While suggestions are welcome; the Book Review Editor solicits reviews of books, exhibitions, performances, videos, or Internet publications. Reviews are between 700 and 1,000 words, including the Works Cited. Reviews are published at the discretion of the co-Editors.

Commentary Send two paper copies, double space all text, including quotations, notes, and references. Use standard-size paper, 12-point font, and one-inch margins. Commentary articles are published at the discretion of the co-Editors.

Copyright Information Once the manuscript has been accepted for publication, the Journal will secure its copyright. The Journal grants to the author personal use of the article and the freedom to reprint the article in any book where s/he is the author or editor. The Journal requires full acknowledgement of the original source of publication.
